I have anxiety - can Reiki help me?

The first thing you need to know is that having anxiety - having depression or anger or any so-called 'negative' emotions doesn't make you a bad person.

Did you take that in?

I'll say it again - you are not a bad person.

There is so much shame attached to having these feelings - and in all honesty, one of the things that actually fuels anxiety, is the pressure we place on ourselves to not have it in the first place. We should be happy, well-adjusted, confident and a little bit sexy - but not anxious. Not angry or depressed. Goodness, no.

I don't believe in shoulds.

Reiki practitioners hold to five Reiki principles:

Just for today, I will let go of anger.

Just for today, I will let go of worry.

Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.

Just for today, I will do my work honestly.

Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbour and to every living thing.

And that's it!

So, so simple - but within those five sentences are the answers to pretty much any problem you can think of. Angry? Just let it go. Worrying? It won't help, so stop it. Resentful? Time to get grateful. Hating on someone? Hating on yourself? Be kind.

They're not saying don't anger, don't worry - they're saying if you feel those things, just for today try letting them go.

Now - when I first started working on all this stuff (there was a lot of stuff!), I had literally no clue how to let it go. That's where Reiki comes in.

When my clients come to see me, they have no idea how they'll start to feel better - but I know that they will - and fast. We always have a chat first, it helps to put them at their ease. There's always a box of tissues in my Reiki room and clients are often surprised to find that they can cry and let go of what they've been hanging on to. They've been given the space to be real and to be safely vulnerable, and they take it.

Once we've had a talk, and found out where you're at, you lie down on the Reiki table, with cushions and blankets to make you as comfortable as possible. I play some peaceful music (being a musician, I'm very fussy about my Reiki playlist, so it's always lovely quality music, not plinky plonky spa nonsense!). I then use a combination of guided meditation and Hypnotherapy techniques to talk you into a lovely, relaxed state, ready for treatment.

Then it's time for the good stuff. Reiki works first by calming the autonomic nervous system - your heart-rate slows, your breathing slows and deepens, your muscles loosen and soften. Then I begin to sense and feel where your energy blockages are, where your energy is stagnant or weak, or over-stimulated and frantic. I begin to draw energy through myself and send it in to you to balance and heal those blockages - and you start to feel more and more relaxed and very deeply at peace. You might even fall asleep!

Clients often report feeling heat, or experiencing tingling or floating sensations, seeing colours, or feeling a kind of magnetic pushing or pulling. They might get twitches in their muscles, or feel 'vibrations'. These are perfectly normal responses to Reiki and all signs of energy movement.

After the session, clients can sometimes feel quite 'spaced out', as if they've been somewhere far away. There is a profound sense of peace and calm within them, and they may take several moments to 'come back'.

And the best bit - they keep this sense of inner calm and take it away with them after the session! Some clients tell me it stays with them for more than a week, sometimes two. When they have a sequence of sessions, the feeling stays with them for longer, and deepens with every session. Within a short space of time, they find that, without even being consciously aware of it, they have started to feel 'normal' - they feel like their old selves.

Deep sigh of relief.

So - how easy is that? You don't need to go into deep excavation of your past, your old hurts, your childhood traumas. You can come to a session, download your immediate worries, and then switch off and just receive. It's the most beautiful way to have true, quality 'Me-time' - and anxiety? Just melts away with ease. Buh-bye!

Tend the body. Free the mind. Heal the soul.
